Biofeedback, Neurofeedback and EEG Training

General Information

In collaboration with the Stens Corporation, The Academy co-sponsors a variety of educational and training programs dealing with biofeedback, neurofeedback and EEG training. Academy Diplomates/Members interested in attending any of these programs receive tuition discounts. Additional information may be obtained by e-mailing The Academy at Info@IABMCP.org.

Generally recognized as the leader in biofeedback training and the distribution of all major lines of biofeedback instruments and software, Stephen Stern, the President of Stens Corporation, has been involved in biofeedback and product development since 1972.

In 1986, under the direction of Philip Hughes, Ph.D., the Professional Biofeedback Certificate Program was created. This program was among the first to receive accreditation from the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA). Today the Stens Corporation continues to provide innovative and cutting-edge products and unique, hands-on training to practitioners throughout the world. Well over 5000 individuals have graduated from the Stens Professional Certificate Program, contributing to its leadership position in the biofeedback field.

The Academy is extremely proud of its association with the Stens Corporation and looks forward to co-sponsoring an increasing number of high quality educational programs. Brief descriptions of some of the programs that are offered on a regular basis are as follows:

Programs

5-Day Professional Biofeedback Certificate Program

This 5-day training seminar is designed to save you time and money. Our core curriculum is specifically designed to give you a clear biofeedback model that allows immediate use with stress disorders and explores other new and innovative direction. Clinicians learn the fundamentals of biofeedback techniques in a 48 hour training session.

An intensive five-day training workshop, the Professional Biofeedback Certificate Program includes 24 hours of hands-on instruction on the most advanced biofeedback systems available, plus 24 hours of clinical applications and procedures in a relaxed seminar learning process.

4-Day Professional EEG Neurofeedback Certificate Program

EEG biofeedback has emerged as one of the dominant forces in the field of biofeedback and it is quickly developing into one of the primary clinical tools for the treatment of neurobehavioral-based disorders and other problems that have a CNS origin. Several thousand practitioners nationwide have trained in neurofeedback methodologies and are actively using these techniques in their practices. This workshop will cover various protocols for ADHD and similar disorders of attention, Anxiety and Depression, Alpha / Theta training for addictions, Migraines and the treatment of Headaches, Sleep Disorders, Chronic Pain, as well as optimum performance applications.

5-Day Quantitative EEG

This 5-day training seminar is designed to teach the basic concepts and introduce the participant to advanced topics in Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG). This is a highly experiential course covering the QEEG from electrode placement to interpretation. All participants will learn electrode placement, recording techniques, visual inspection of the EEG and how to recognize artifacts by the collection of 19 channel EEG on a variety of hardware/software options with a maximum of three participants to each EEG system. The course will additionally cover EEG editing, QEEG analysis and the use of statistics and databases for interpretation. The participant will be exposed to a variety of software for analysis and will be given an understanding of basic concepts such as amplitude, power, coherence and advanced concepts such as Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) for interpreting the QEEG. Research and clinically relevant interpretive techniques will be included.

3-Day Quantitative EEG

This 3-day training seminar is designed to teach the basic concepts and introduce the participant to advanced topics in Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG).

2-Day Advanced Quantitative EEG

This 2-day training seminar is designed to teach the advanced and intermediate concepts and introduce the participant to Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) analysis approaches, including ICA (independent component analysis) de-artifacting of the EEG, bispectral analysis, and phenotypes as an approach to EEG categorization. This is a course also covers the QEEG technically, and also will present the participants with advanced concepts in visual inspection of the EEG and how to recognize artifacts and clinical EEG patterns. The course will additionally cover some of the uses of statistics and databases for interpretation. The participant will be given an opportunity to clarify basic concepts such as amplitude, power, coherence and advanced concepts such as Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) and Z-score based approaches for interpreting the QEEG. Research and clinically relevant interpretive techniques will be included, as well as a survey of the common software and database options in the field.

Everything You Wanted to Know About
Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback

Participants of this seminar will be able to:

  1. Define Heart Rate Variability biofeedback
  2. State the origins and purpose of HRV within the human body
  3. Describe the various measures of HRV
  4. Relate HRV to Resonant Frequency and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia
  5. Perform a Resonant Frequency Assessment
  6. Discuss two major theories that causally relate autonomic flexibility (represented by HRV) and the capacity for emotional regulation
  7. Define coherence and how it relates to HRV

Requirements for Online Seminars

  1. High Speed Internet Connection
  2. Access to Windows OS (either on PC or Apple Computer)
  3. Our online courses include an audio conference service that offers either phone or voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone options, similar to Skype
  4. Microphone and speakers compatible with your computer. It is our recommendation to use headset style to avoid echoes. Participants who join the training via VoIP need speakers or headphones to hear the training and a microphone if they want them to speak. (We recommend a USB headset).
  5. All software utilized will be distributed in advance when you register. Demo mode or freeware will be utilized.
  6. If you miss a given session no refunds are offered, although a make up session may be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor and expense of the participant.
  7. If the minimum number of participants is not met you will be given the option to enroll in the next available offering of the course with priority.
  8. Unless otherwise specified in the blueprint the courses are not exclusive to users of NeXus products or services. There are some specific courses to learn how to use those products or services. Other courses may cover topics applicable to all manufacturers.
  9. This course is open to users of all biofeedback equipment.

Anatomy and Physiology/Human Biology Online Course

This is an “at home learning format” based on audiovisual CD lectures and readings and includes a movie on Biofeedback. You can start anytime and work with the instructor via e-mail. This course is equivalent to a three credit undergraduate course in anatomy and physiology and meets BCIA's requirements for having this course for certification and recertification in biofeedback and neurofeedback. It is approved by the APA. This will cover all basic areas of A&P but from a behavioral perspective.

2-Day Chronic Pain & HRV Workshop

Mounting evidence points to the efficacy of HRV biofeedback for autonomically mediated disorders and perhaps for Anxiety and Depression. In this workshop the fundamentals of HRV are explained and illustrated. The basic biofeedback technique pioneered by the presenter and his colleagues in the US and Russia is carefully demonstrated and each participant is coached on the equipment to assure competency. In Part II, protocols for chronic pain, IBS, Anxiety Disorders, Hypertension, and other disorders are presented and practiced. The participant should be able to use these protocols in their own home or clinical settings by the workshop's completion.

1-Day Introduction to EEG Neurofeedback

An intensive one-day introductory seminar about EEG Biofeedback (Neurofeedback) - an effective intervention for many central nervous system based disorders including ADHD, migraine, anxiety, depression, substance and behavioral abuse disorders and more.
